Late in 2021 and earlier this year, you may have heard about major telecommunications carriers ending their support for their 3G networks. This 3G “sunset” or “shutdown” will take place throughout 2022, with AT&T ending support for its 3G network starting on February 22, 2022.
By January 1, 2023, the 3G sunset will have impacted millions of devices, including cell phones, medical devices, smart-home and security devices, electric vehicle chargers, and modems and meters that monitor and report solar system production.
You may have received notice from Spruce Power — or your local service provider — letting you know that it’s time to take action to continue to monitor your solar production. If your system is impacted by the 3G sunset, you need to replace your meter.
If your system relies on its 3G modem (instead of Wi-Fi) to connect to the internet, the discontinuation of 3G support will interrupt your solar system's communications.
